Ostara 1998

*This report was originally written by Erich, the founder of our Hall. It has been reposted here in an effort to collect all our resources on our new site.

Ostara was held on Wodan’s Day, March 25th, in our usual strip of land next to the Rio Grande. With spring’s might manifesting all around us and the temperature rising to upwards of 75 degrees Fahrenheit, it was an absolutely beautiful day. Our site was incredible. We were walking down the worn track of the main path to find a site when Barhelm called attention to a site I we had almost passed. He saw a raven by a small clearing through the trees. That being reason enough for me, I agreed that it would be our site.

Upon ducking through a small arch of branches to enter the clearing, I was immediately greeted by the great features of this site. In the north of small circular clearing, a tree had somehow been partially uprooted and its top had come to rest on another tree close to the bank. It had stayed half-rooted, and yet fallen just so that it created a horizontal bar, about 3 feet from the ground. Needless to say it lent itself eagerly to the holding of our packs and provisions, and beneath it was an excellent spot for pouring libation and leaving offering. As Barhelm began the blot, the wind picked up mightily and the bosque was alive with a great rushing roar and an incredible amount of movement – I had commented just previously about how much I enjoy when it becomes obvious that it really is Wodan’s Day.

The blot was well-spoken by Barhelm and did great honor in hailing Eostre, Fro Ing, Nerthus, and all gods and goddesses alike. Our ancestors were also hailed, and so too the landwights, an offering having been left for the latter. We recognized the complete end of winter’s woe as we celebrated the coming of spring and all of the gifts of the season.
